While these statistics show that there is a large, underserved market in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions in women, just how Viagra can benefit these women is yet to be seen.
From inception, the focus of Pfizer had been to manufacture a drug that would treat angina in men. However, this drug, rather than having the expected effect on angina, caused erections in the men who were believed to be impotent. On further studies, it was discovered that this drug not only increases the rate of blood flow to the penis but to the clitoris. Now the moot question is: Why is Pfizer marketing the drug only to men, when it also produces the same effect on women?
According to a spokeswoman for the manufacturer, Maryann Caprino, she opined that the complexities involved in the issue of female sexual dysfunction made it difficult to market the drug for women at that point in time.
