What is the Future for Female Viagra?
Viagra is the registered trademark drug of Pfizer famed for its sex-boosting ability. Since making its debut in April 1998, the drug has made headlines as one of the best selling drugs of all times. Grossing over 1.2billion US dollars just under one year of release into the market, the drug is said to have been prescribed to about 13.5million men worldwide, according to the drug prescription-tracking giant IMS Health. Because of the success of Real Viagra tablets with men, researchers are beginning to question if this drug can also be beneficial to women.
According to statistics, more women suffer sexual dysfunction than men – a recent study conducted by the American Medical Association showed that approximately 43 percent of women have one form of sexual dysfunction or the other to about 31 percent of their male counterparts. While these statistics show that there is a large, underserved market in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions in women, just how Viagra can benefit these women is yet to be seen.
From inception, the focus of Pfizer had been to manufacture a drug that would treat angina in men. However, this drug, rather than having the expected effect on angina, caused erections in the men who were believed to be impotent. On further studies, it was discovered that this drug not only increases the rate of blood flow to the penis but to the clitoris. Now the moot question is: Why is Pfizer marketing the drug only to men, when it also produces the same effect on women?
According to a spokeswoman for the manufacturer, Maryann Caprino, she opined that the complexities involved in the issue of female sexual dysfunction made it difficult to market the drug for women at that point in time. Succinctly put, any woman that would like to Buy Viagra online safely would have to wait until there is a better understanding of sexual dysfunctions in women.
However, the assertions of Maryann have not deterred doctors from prescribing the drug for their female patients, even though the Food and Drug Administration is yet to approve it for use by them. In the opinion of a University of New Mexico associate professor, Dr. H. Nurnberg, the response of women to the drug is great. In his assessment women do better than men in their response to the drug.
In a research the professor personally carried out, where he gave a few women who were expressing temporary sexual dysfunction induced by antidepressants, he found out that the women were able to finish their therapy while retaining their sexual activity with the help of the drug. A different study conducted at Columbia University, however, produced a different verdict about the efficacy of the drug on women.
Jennifer Berman, a urologist in Boston University, in a clear departure from the practice of self-reporting that had been the normal way of sourcing for information on the issue, conducted empirical studies to gauge physiological responses of women to the drug. Having women stimulate themselves an hour after ingestion of Viagra, Berman measured changes in the flow of blood, genital sensation, vaginal pH and elasticity. Berman concluded her studies by saying that the flow of blood to the clitoris would be meaningless if a woman’s perception of her sexual pleasure is not enhanced.
Before any woman thinks of Buying Viagra at cheap prices, it is pertinent for her to bear in mind that no evidence exists to show that the sexual experienced by women is enhanced by the flow of blood to her clitoris, according to the words of Leonore Tiefer. A clinical professor, Leonore went on to say that the fact that the Viagra worked for a small fraction of the women populace does not justify all the attention being given to the drug.
